Faculty of Management and Finance to increase student intake in 2021
The Faculty of Management and Finance is in the process of increasing the student intake to meet the growing demand for higher education. As such, the faculty is expected to expand the current student intake of 400 students by at least 50%, leading to an enrolment of 600+ students in the coming intake. To cope with this expansion in student numbers, the faculty intends to expand the capacity of the physical resources too. Consequently, a new building complex at the faculty is being constructed and well underway at the moment. Apart from the administrative block designed to accommodate dean office and the working space for faculty administration, the new building complex will consist of a computer unit as well. The computer unit with the capacity of serving 200 students will provide students with a novel experience, enabling them to utilize online study materials and gain access to cutting-edge technology in a more convenient manner.
On the direction of the Vice Chancellor, Director and Instructors of the Department of Physical Education Unit of UoR launched a physical fitness program for all staff members. Program commences on every weekdays starting from 4 .30 pm to 6 pm.
Felicitation to the Professor Emeritus Ruchira Cumaranatunga
Senior Professor Palawinnege Ruchira Tharangini Cumaranatunga who served in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences &Technology retired after more than 40 years of singular service to the University of Ruhuna. The felicitation ceremony, organized by the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology was held on 27th August 2020 at the Auditorium of the Faculty. Vice-chancellor, Senior Professor Sujeewa Amarasena, joined the felicitation ceremony via Zoom and extended well wishes to Prof. Cumaranatunga. A number of academic staff, colleagues of Prof. Cumaranatunga and her students appreciated the great service rendered by Prof Ruchira in numerous capacities. Students of the Faculty performed “Pooja” and “Guru Upahara” dances.. Prof Cumaranatunga addressed the gathering and shared her thoughts and more than 40 years of experience in the University of Ruhuna. A large gathering including Deans of the Faculties, Academic staff, Council members, Registrar, Librarian, Deputy Registrars, administrative staff, non-academic staff, current and past students participated the event.
Faculty of Agriculture facilitates the 40 years of unparalleled service of Senior Professor Ranjith Senaratne
Senior Professor Ranjith Senaratne, Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, retired after 40 years dedicated service to the Sri Lankan higher education system. Prof. R. Senaratne obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture special degree from the University of Peradeniya in 1977 with second class honours and M.Phil (Agric.) degree from the same university in 1980. He obtained his PhD at Agricultural University in Vienna in 1986. Prof. R. senaratne started his academic career as an assistant lecturer in Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture in 1980. He was appointed as a Professor of Crop Science in 1998 and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna for nearly eight years before being appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna in March 2001, a post which he held with distinction for six years until March 2007. As the Vice Chancellor, he was strongly committed to promoting academic excellence, high impact research, creative enterprise, strategic partnership with industry, community development and international cooperation. Some of the landmark achievement during his tenure include introduction of the CVCD Excellence Awards Scheme in 2006, launching of the Vice Chancellor’s Award scheme at University of Ruhuna, launching of the University Song at during the Silver Jubilee celebrations in 2003. He also served as the Vice Chairman University Grants Commission from May 2011- 2015 and Chairman, Ocean University (National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering) from 2008- 2015. He had been awarded “Ruhunu Puthra” in 2000 in appreciation and recognition of the services rendered for the regional and national development. And also he had been awarded the title “Sri Rohana Ranjana Vidya Nidhi” in 2005 by the Executive Committee of Rohana Sanga Sabha in recognition of the outstanding educational and community service rendered and most importantly conferred an honorary doctorate in Civil Law (DCL) by the University of Durham in the UK in recognition of academic distinction, effective management and visionary development of an international strategy for the University of Ruhuna. Currently, Prof. Senaratne is serving as the chairman of National Science Foundation. He rendered an irreplaceable service to the Faculty of Agriculture as well as to the University of Ruhuna for nearly 4 decades until his retirement on the 25th March 2020.

The annual Agribusiness Launch of the Agribusiness Management students of the Faculty of Agriculture was held successfully on 13th August, 2020, for the fifth consecutive year at at the Department of Agriculture Economics. Organizers say that the annual events aims to equip the undergraduates with required skills in entrepreneurships, business communication and developing positive attitudes, nurturing them as job-creating entrepreneurs in future rather than job seekers.
