The Department of Computer Science, University of Ruhuna and Industrial Financial Systems (IFS) jointly organized an IT scholarship program to offer a computer training scheme for Tsunami affected community of the southern region by offering courses in Computer Technology. The aim of introducing these courses is to provide opportunities for school children and teachers in Tsunami affected areas in the southern region to build skills needed to advance their knowledge on Information Technology issues.
The scholarship awarding ceremony of this program was held on 10th of March 2006 at 1 p.m. at the auditorium, faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences of the University of Ruhuna . Under the phase 1 of this program 45 School teachers and 265 school children were selected. A new computer laboratory to the Department of Computer Science was opened at 12.30 p.m, as a further step of this IT scholarship Program. The Department of Physics, University of Ruhuna, provides the building space and the IFS ( Colombo ) donates 25 computers and other IT equipments for this new laboratory
