INTRODUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Geography offers programs designed to improve understanding of the interaction between man and environment. The programs also intend to make students aware of the nature of physical and human environments, and the challenges and problems of development.

At the undergraduate level, the Department provides General and Special Degree Programs. The students who seek to specialize in Geography are selected on the basis of their performance at the 1000 level course unit examinations at the end of the first year.

Department Facilities

  • Department Library - The Department maintains a library, which is extensively used by the students. It has a large collection of books and periodicals.

  • Computer Unit - The Computer Unit of the Department is used for undergraduate teaching and student practical exercises. This is accessible to the staff too. This network has 12 computers and internet facilities.
  • GIS Laboratory - A new GSI Laboratory is to be set up this Semester. In addition to the normal under graduate study courses using GIS, the services of this will be extended to other short training courses for the benefit of the region.
  • Surveying and Cartography Laboratory - A well Equipped surveying cartography laboratory is the pride of the Department. This laboratory also serves the need of the school of the southern region.
  • University Meteorological Station - Established in 1996 the Meteorological Station is run and maintained by the Department of Geography. It serves the Department students, local student population, University academia, industry and the region in general. It is linked to the national grid (Station 510A). Daily observations are recorded.
  • Professor Weerakkody Collection - A collection of samples on Natural History. This collection consists of geological, geomorphologic, coral and algae samples. There are more than a  thousand coral samples which were collected under the financial assistance of Word Wild Life Fund of Washington D.C.
  • Geographical and Environmental Society - The Society is an active organization of the undergraduates of Geography. They actively engage in :

  • Publishing an Annual Journal
  • Department Alumni - The Department has produced about 1835 alumni since its inception. Their break down is as follows:
  • There is an upward trend in the demand for geography graduates of Ruhuna University in the employment sector. They are well placed in various employment fields, in both the public and private sector. Many alumni have been selected for further training abroad in the respective institutions they serve.
