Southern Region of Sri Lanka

This three administrative district of Galle, Matara and Hambantota are historical value and rich of natural environment that are very attractive to travelers both foreign and local.This is one of the provinces which is situated between the wet and dry zone. Galle and most of Matara district are in the former while Hambantota is wholly in the latter.

The area covers nearly 5543 km with a population of 2.27 millions consists of Sinhala,Muslim,Tamil and Burger communities who live in peace and close affinsly.

Most of economic activities are also in the wet zone part.These include fishing in the costal areas and paddy cultivation both done virtually at subsistence level. Tourism is perhaps the most prominent of the more recent economic activities. There are only a few industries in south. Tea is produced in small,dispersed factories. Most of the other industries are a scatter of even smaller production units rural and almost cottage-craft level. These include making of products from locally deporits,coconut, fiber etc. In the dry zone part, salt is produced at Hambanthota.

There are 37 provincial secretariats and 4 sub provincial secretariats in the Southern province to strengthen the administration for well planned development and to serve the people.
