APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Dully filled applications should be submitted with the full payment on or before 23rd March 2007.
Payments must be by cheque drawn in favour to the Head/Department of Geography, University of ruhuna.
Cheques should be handed over to the Head of the Department of Geography, University of Ruhuna, Matara.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of the proposed workshop is to train professionals of the governmentand private sector organizations on the use of GIS as a tool in their disciplines.the workshop also provides a conceptual overview of Geographical informationsystems and hands-on experience using ArcView software it teaches basic ArcView functionality and some in-depth instructions in ArcView softwares powerful display and analysis capabilities. Participantsare introduced ArcView Graphical User interface.in addition use of Arcview and its extensions. increating, editing, displaying, querying, and analyzing geographic and tabular data for accurate maps.

CONTENTS
-Introduction to Geographical Information Systems(GIS), Maps and their characteristics, GIS software.
-Data characteristics and data models,Adding tabular data to maps,Creating tables, editing , modifyingupdating and joining tablels Data symbolizing and classification ,Labeling maps with text and graphics.
-Acquisition of data (from scanned aerial photographs,Satellite images,GPS data etc),Georeferencing maps,Creating and editing thematic maps.
-Special data manipulation and analysis, Creating maps for presentation Preparation of layout and printingof maps.

TARGET GROUP
Those who are new to GIS field employed in private and government establishments. No prior knowledgeof GIS or ArcView is required.
However,computer literacy is an essential factor to follow the course
