The University of Ruhuna located in the Mecca of the Southern Province constitutes the brain trust and the intellectual pulse of the region. Standing robustly on an undulating and scenic hillock at Wellamadama with a unique and impressive architectural landscape, this seat of higher learning is committed to quality education, research excellence, strategic partnership with industry and community development. Following its humble beginning in 1978 with four faculties, - Agriculture, Humanities & Social Sciences, Medicine and Science, with about 40 academics, 50 non-academics and 275 students, it has made |
||
| great strides in
the past twenty five years in the academic, research and out-reach
spheres, achieving enviable growth in academic stature and intellectual
and infrastructure resources . Presently, it has six faculties including the newly founded Faculty of Management & Finance, with a total of about 450 academics, 800 non-academics and about 5000 students, and has hither-to produced nearly 10,000 graduates. It is rapidly developing and will establish yet another faculty shortly, namely Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences - the first of its kind in the country, thereby emerging as a leader of higher education in the country. Establishment of a business incubator with strategic alliance with industry and a service laboratory providing analytical and testing services to the public and private sector institutions has not only given an entrepreneurial dimension to the university, but also an exposure of our students to the "real world" issues. Setting up of a Resource Centre for Modern Languages recently with the state-of-the art-technology to teach Tamil and some important foreign languages shows its commitment to ethnic harmony and forward-looking policies. Many more are in the pipeline and will see the light of day shortly. Launching a Consultancy and Advisory Services Facility and establishing Centres for Lifelong Learning, Early Childhood Development and Indigenous Knowledge are to name a few. | |||
